CeSPI-SID International Conference & Colloquium

The first important public event of the project was an International Conference that was held in Rome on Thursday July 6, 2006. The CeSPI-SID Conference discussed the relationship between the sustainable management of migratory flows and development policies in Africa. It aimed to create more solid collaboration among European Mediterranean countries particularly France, Italy and Spain and the European Commission on more sustainable migratory flows from Africa. The timing of this event was particularly significant in view of the Euro-African Conference that took place in Rabat, Morocco on 11-12 July. Thus, the CeSPI-SID event was a key preparatory event for Rabat

Speakers at the CeSPI-SID conference included high-profile officials, such as the EU Vice President Franco Frattini and the President of the Pan-African Parliament, Gertrude Mongella and Italy’s Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs (responsible for development cooperation and Sub-Saharan Africa), Hon. Patrizia Sentinelli.

Following the Conference there was a two day Colloquium from 7 – 8 July with a series of participatory workshops. During this Colloquium participants explored more deeply, the strategic areas outlined by the CeSPI-SID Conference 6 July and the possibility of forming network of European and African experts, both academic and practitioners who would continue to engage in the follow up monitoring of international development cooperation processes.
